Growers of Vidalia onions in Georgia have voted in favor of continuing the marketing order for the sweet onions.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the marketing order, reported that 97% of eligible producers voted in favor of keeping the program; those growers represent 99% of the volume of Vidalias grown by the those who voted.

The Vidalia onion marketing order requires a vote on whether to continue the marketing order. Two-thirds of growers participating in the vote (or growers representing two-thirds of the crop volume) had to vote in favor of the referendum, according to a news release from the USDA.

Growers fund the marketing order’s production research, marketing development projects and marketing promotion programs through assessments to the Vidalia Onion Committee.
