Preview for Episode 11 of Corn College TV
Be sure to tune in for episode 11 of Corn College TV to learn from the field experience of the Farm Journal agronomic team. Farm Journal Field Agronomist Ken Ferrie and Associate Field Agronomist Missy Bauer give their weekly lesson in corn production.
Use the Systems Approach to understand emerging pests. Take a sharp look at a microscopic enemy–nematodes can rob yields and profits from producers. Nematodes are a problem you’ve never seen but probably have seen their effects.
Then head to the field to learn the importance of preharvest scouting. Get an idea of what the ear count is in your fields. And the second important tip is to understand standability because the last thing you want to do is harvest down corn.
Reach into the farmer’s toolbox to learn the steps in testing for corn nematodes. There are two timings, at harvest or early in the season four to six weeks after planting. Bauer uses her experience to give you tips straight from the field.
Join Ferrie as he provides top tips for managing residue after harvest. Use his pointers in taking care of what’s left behind for the crops ahead. Be sure you’re ready to follow up right behind the combine as Ferrie lays out the keys to residue decomposition in corn on corn.
With a question posed to our agronomists, Ferrie details the differences in nitrogen inhibitors. Make a smart choice with using the right inhibitor in the right field conditions.
Tune in Wednesday morning at 7:30 CST on RFD-TV. Or catch the second airing of episode on Saturday immediately following “U.S. Farm Report.”
