Vanguard prepares for Peruvian grape season

Vanguard International USA Inc., Issaquah, Wash., will be starting its Peruvian grape program soon.

The grapes, which begin arriving in the U.S. mid-November, have experienced some positive weather changes this season in Peruvian vineyards, according to a news release. With the exception of the first three months, the high temperatures this year have been averaging higher than in 2019.

The company is expecting “strong yields,” according to the release. Vanguard International has been growing production steadily, and expects to have just over three million boxes this season for worldwide distribution, which is up significantly from past season. Newer plantings coming into full production is boosting production, according to the release.

As the growing season — and the COVID-19 pandemic — progressed, Vanguard Peru established safety protocols. Employees will also have personal protective equipment in the packinghouse.

“It is the people that work within Vanguard Peru that form the heart and soul of our business and ultimately define our success,” Manuel Yzaga of Vanguard Perú said in the release.

The season starts with red seedless and IP (intellectual property) green varieties. The season wraps up by the end of March, according to Vanguard.
