ESPN has set the date for the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, a college football bowl game sponsored by the Idaho Potato Commission.

The sports network will kick off the televised bowl on Dec. 22 at 1:30 Mountain time at Boise State University’s Albertsons Stadium, according to a news release.

With ESPN viewership in the millions, the release said the event draws attention to college football stars and Idaho potatoes.

“People are craving normalcy during this unusual year, and for many being able to watch their favorite college football teams play ball provides entertainment and something exciting to look forward to,” Frank Muir, president and CEO of the Idaho Potato Commission, said in the release. “And there’s no doubt the players, who have had their seasons sidetracked a bit will play their hearts out on the blue turf.”

The release said some of the focal points of the game include Spuddy Buddy, the Idaho Potato Commission’s mascot who was once voted best bowl mascot by ESPN. The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl audience also delights to see the dumping of french fries on the winning coach's head, in place of the traditional dumping of Gatorade.

This year, because of COVID-19, the release said decisions regarding fan attendance and capacities in the stands and parking lots will be made in accordance with state, county and local guidelines.
