Argentine pear program starts with bartletts on both coasts

Awe Sum Organics, Santa Cruz, Calif., started its pear program in Argentina in mid-February with arrivals of bartletts on both coasts.

Productores Argentinos Integrados S.A. — PAI — which has been growing in the Rio Negro Valley region for more than 20 years, supplies Awe Sum with organic pears. PAI fruit is Fair Trade USA certified, according to a news release.

“The growing conditions climatically have been excellent this season with near perfect temperatures for our pears,” Awe Sum Organic President David Posner said in the release. “Hail is common in the region and this season we were lucky as there was less than normal.”

Awe Sum Organics’ Argentinian pear variety seasons are:

  • Bartletts: mid-February through mid-April;
  • Red bartletts: early March through the end of April;
  •  Abate fetel: mid-March through mid- to late-May (shipping to both coasts);
  • D’Anjou: mid-March to July;
  • Autumn Bartlett: mid-April through July; and
  • Bosc: mid-April to mid-June
