Progressive Produce says its California potato season is starting with a crop that shows promising signs despite earlier weather challenges.

"The wet and cold weather has delayed organic and conventional potatoes, with most California regions close to a month behind their normal schedule. While sizing may be affected by the cold weather, with enough California sunshine, the crops can wake up and start to size up," Progressive Produce Director of Procurement Gael Vazquez said in a news release. "Quality so far has been excellent with the volume slightly up from last year, and we expect demand to be high due to the storage crop finishing earlier than expected."

Progressive Produce says it is committed to providing unique offerings, as seen in its specialty potato program, which includes organic and conventional baby potatoes and fingerlings.

"We take pride in delivering high-quality potatoes that exceed our customers' expectations regarding quality and flavor," Vazquez said in the release.

Peak supply is expected in early May, in time for Cinco de Mayo celebrations, according to the release. (Progressive Produce has an organic potato taco recipe as a finger-food option for parties and gatherings.)

Progressive Produce potato packaging includes 50-pound bulk and 5-, 3- and 1.5-pound bags.

“With a focus on delivering exceptional quality and customer service, Progressive Produce is poised to meet the demand for fresh and high-quality potatoes this season,” the release said.

The company has shipping California locations in Los Angeles, La Mirada and Bakersfield. More information about the company’s California-grown potatoes is available through Progressive Produce sales managers.

Los Angeles-based Progressive Produce is a year-round grower-packer-shipper of fresh produce, with thousands of acres throughout North and South America of potatoes, onions, asparagus, citrus, and other fruits and vegetables, according to the release.
