CBP snags drugs worth $4.2 million from produce load
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Pharr International Bridge in Texas found and seized $4.2 million worth of hard narcotics from a commercial trailer carrying fresh limes.
On Sept. 19, CBP officers at the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge cargo facility referred a red Kenworth tractor/trailer hauling a load of fresh limes for a vehicle non-intrusive imaging system inspection, according to a news release.
The shipment was consequently sent to the secondary inspection dock, where officers discovered 86 packages of alleged methamphetamine and six packages of alleged heroin hidden in the trailer.
The officers seized the 258 pounds of methamphetamine and 27.6 pounds of heroin, as well as the tractor/trailer. The estimated street value of the meth is more than $3.6 million, while the heroine is worth $625,000, according to the release,
“This interception of dangerous drugs truly exemplifies the teamwork of our officers working at our cargo facility,” Andres Guerra, port director of Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry, said in the release.
“Being able to detect anomalies within your work environment is how our officers are able to dig further and follow their inquisitive instinct, which usually produces positive results.”
