Hello Fresh meal kits with red chilis recalled in Canada

Meal kit brands Hello Fresh and Chef’s Plate recalled six products in Canada containing red chilis.

The day after a Canadian company recalled red chili peppers from Vietnam for salmonella contamination concerns, meal kit brands Hello Fresh and Chef’s Plate recalled six products in Canada containing red chilis.

Hello Fresh Canada Inc. issue the recall Jan. 21, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. The CFIA is conducting an investigation, according to a notice on the agency’s website.

The original recall affected red chili packs distributed by Canada Herb, Etobicoke, Ontario, imported from Vina Fruits & Herb Co., Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The recall was limited to Ontario retailers, but the CFIA reported the chilis could have been repackaged and distributed elsewhere.

The Hello Fresh/Chef’s Plate recall includes meal kits sent to multiple provinces: Prince Edward Island, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalls, which have been designated as Class 2 recalls, denoting “moderate risk,” according to the CFIA.

The Jan. 21 recalled products are:

  • Two Hello Fresh Coconut Dal kits, 2- and 4-serving meals, best before Jan. 29, code WK19041920 ;
  • Two Chef’s Plate Beef Chow Mein kits, 2-serving meals, best before Jan. 19 and Jan 22; and
  • Two Chef’s Plate Beef Chow Mein kits, 4-serving meals, best before Jan. 19 and Jan 22.

The CFIA is conducting an investigation, which could lead to more recalls, according to the notice. The agency is verifying the products are being removed from the marketplace.
