The California Avocado Commission is seeking candidates for its board of directors’ public member position.

The volunteer position, which serves through Oct. 31, 2024, provides an opportunity to represent the community and have a voice in the future of the California avocado industry, according to a post of the commission’s website. The public member has the same powers, rights and privileges as any other board member, the CAC said.

The commission says candidates should have experience in one of these areas: public service, food safety, health/nutrition, marketing, education or other relevant experience. Previous public members have included marketers, registered dietitians and a chef/wellness advocate.

A California resident is preferred, and the public member may not have any financial interest in the avocado industry, according to the post.

The CAC board meets about fives times a year, with gatherings typically held in Irvine, Calif., or virtually. Travel expenses associated with attending meetings are reimbursed, the CAC said.

Interested candidates should submit resumes to cac.iaf@avocado.org by May 26, 2023. The California Secretary of Food and Agriculture will appoint the public member from nominees recommended by the commission.
