Fresh apple inventories up slightly on April 1

U.S. fresh apples in storage on April 1 totaled 53.3 million 42-pound cartons, 4% more than the inventories reported last April and 1.9% less than the April five-year average, according to the U.S. Apple Association.

U.S. fresh apples in storage on April 1 totaled 53.3 million 42-pound cartons, 4% more than the inventories reported last April and 1.9% less than the April five-year average, according to the U.S. Apple Association.

According to U.S. Apple’s survey, the total number of apples in storage on April 1 was 75.5 million cartons, 1.1% more than last April’s total of 74.7 million cartons and 1.5% below the five-year average for that date.

The USDA reported the average fob price for fresh apples on April was $27.78 per carton, down slightly from $28.91 per carton the same week a year ago.

According to U.S. Apple, April 1 fresh holdings of selected varieties were:

  • Ambrosia: 855,570 cartons
  • Cosmic Crisp: 2,265,865 cartons
  • Fuji: 5,618,640 cartons
  • Gala: 8,419,420 cartons
  • Golden Delicious: 2,441,359 cartons
  • Granny Smith: 8,451,544 cartons
  • Honeycrisp: 5,855,134 cartons
  • Pink Lady/ Cripps Pink: 4,516,699 cartons
  • Red Delicious: 10,301,703 cartons
  • Total Varieties: 53,254,202 cartons
