Gotham Greens, a New York-based greenhouse grower, recently broke ground on its second greenhouse in the Chicago’s Pullman area.

The 140,000-square-foot facility will be Chicago’s largest agricultural greenhouse, according to a news release, and will add 60 permanent jobs. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Gotham Greens founders Viraj Puri and Eric Haley were on hand March 15 for the ground breaking ceremony, according to the release.

“Gotham Greens’ decision to double down and build a second greenhouse is a vote of confidence in Chicago and another sign of the economic renaissance underway in the historic Pullman community,” Emanuel said.

“Pullman’s historic past is matched only by its growing economic resurgence today, thanks to partners like Gotham Greens.”

Gotham Greens plans to grow vegetables and herbs year-round in the new facility for retailers, restaurants and institutional foodservice, according to the release.

The company’s first Pullman location, a 75,000-square-foot greenhouse on the roof of a Method Products factory, opened in 2015.
