The Packer’s Tom Karst visited with Jay Singh on April 17, previewing the upcoming freshPACKmoves 2019 conference and also talking about sustainability in packaging.

Singh, professor and packaging program director for the Orfalea College of Business at Cal Poly State University, is one of the organizers of Cal Poly’s freshPACKmoves 2019 packaging seminar. The May 20-22 event is set for Pismo Beach, Calif., and online registration is available at the event website.

The conference will focus on packaging innovation, food safety and traceability, and cold-chain logistics for fresh perishables.

Regarding trends in packaging, Singh said protection of product can’t be discounted in its importance.

“At the end of the day, it’s protection, it’s delivering that product,” he said.

Using recyclable materials is the foundation of sustainability in packaging, Singh said.
