Value of U.S. produce imports from Mexico jumps

While import value of Mexican tomatoes showed no increase, the value of Mexican produce shipments to the U.S. increased at a rapid clip for multiple commodities in the most recent 12-month period, USDA statistics show.

While import value of Mexican tomatoes showed no increase, the value of Mexican produce shipments to the U.S. increased at a rapid clip for multiple commodities in the most recent 12-month period, USDA statistics show.

In the period from December 2020 to November 2021, U.S. imports of avocados rose 17% in value compared with 2020, and were up 54% from 2016.

U.S. imports of avocados, at $2.64 billion for the period, represented the top valued commodity from Mexico.

U.S. imports of Mexican berries rose 19% in 2021 compared with a year ago and scored 123% higher compared with 2016.

Other Mexican commodities showing double-digit value increases to the U.S. were peppers (15%), citrus (27%), grapes (10%), mangoes (12%), lettuce (16%), onions (12%), and beans (21%). The USDA statistics showed only eggplant (-8%) and squash (-23%) showed decreases compared with last year, while tomatoes showed no change in value.
