Produce industry veteran Bob Schachtel, 75, died Nov. 16.

Schachtel had worked for San Diego, Calif.-based Expo Fresh LLC for the last 25 years, said friend Norman Walsh, owner of Arrowhead Packaging Co., Oceanside, Calif.

Walsh said Schachtel was a friend for more than 25 years, calling Schachtel an “old school” produce salesmen whose work was his love.

“He was a man of his word,” Walsh said. “He was the kind of guy that if you had problems, he could fix them.”

Schachtel also loved to fish, and Walsh accompanied Schachtel to several fishing tournaments off the coasts of Mexico and California.

Schachtel was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1944 and had worked in the produce industry in various jobs across the U.S. for about five decades, Walsh said.

Survivors include his son William Schachtel, of Anchorage, Alaska.

A celebration of life event for Schachtel is planned for 1 p.m. Jan. 11 at the Southwestern Yacht Club, San Diego, Calif.
