Corrugated and paper packaging company Smurfit Kappa recently released its latest Sustainable Development Report, which details the steps is taking to reach a goal of full sustainability.

That effort includes Smurfit Kappa’s Better Planet Packaging Initiative, which helps clients cut down and eliminate plastic packaging in favor of more sustainable, recyclable and biodegradable options.

The company is also addressing the energy use in producing paper products, dropping emissions by 29% compared to its baseline year of 2005, according to a news release.

Steven Stoffer, group vice president of development at Smurfit Kappa, said the report is evidence of the company’s transparency in its sustainability goals, and how it is progressing in meeting the United Nation’s 2030 Sustainability Development Goals, which Smurfit Kappa supports.

“For Smurfit Kappa, sustainability is not only about mitigating climate change and reducing inefficiency,” Stoffer said in the release. “For packaging to be truly sustainable, it must be produced and designed in a sustainable fashion and be biodegradable within a relatively short time after multiple uses. Paper-based packaging is uniquely positioned to do this.”
