Laura Himes — Vice president of sourcing for produce, Walmart

For me, a motivation to serve the industry as a volunteer leader is …

I didn’t start in this industry 30 years ago with the intention of dedicating my entire career to produce. My goal was an international career, and joining Chiquita through a management program allowed me to gain a broad understanding of the company and live in different countries.

What I soon realized is how dynamic and exciting this industry is, and how consumers often underestimate the thought, attention, planning, complexity and creativity involved in delivering fruits, vegetables, and florals from farm to home. I’ve learned a great deal from colleagues over the years, and I see volunteering as a way to give back to those who’ve supported me and those new to the industry.

One industry issue that I am passionate about is …

I am deeply committed to addressing one industry challenge: attracting and developing diverse talent and farmers. My passion lies in creating an inclusive environment within this sector, whether for individuals from underserved communities or recent graduates seeking their initial job opportunities.

Our industry requires diversity in backgrounds, gender, demographics, skill sets and ideas. As we confront global challenges, we must embrace all perspectives and experiences to find effective solutions.
