Cantaloupe sets new world record at more than 70 pounds

Doug English, the brother of The Packer’s national accounts manager Gary English, set a new record recently for the world’s largest cantaloupe.

The previous Missouri state record was 46.5 pounds, and the previous world record was 69.6 pounds. Doug’s cantaloupe weighed in at 71.6 pounds.

The seed used to grow the giant fruit came from the 2018 world-record cantaloupe, which was 65.9 pounds.

“Danny Vester from North Carolina was kind enough to share his seed,” said English, who has also grown some very large gourds. “The giant veggie community is noted for their generosity in sharing info and seeds. I will carry on this tradition. Anybody who would like to grow the world-record seed, please have them contact me.”

In case anyone is wondering, Doug told Gary the giant cantaloupe tasted awesome.

The English brothers grew up in the St. Louis suburbs, but Doug has always been interested in plants and has a degree in horticulture from the University of Missouri, Gary said.
