Apples in storage up big on June 1

U.S. fresh apples in storage on June 1 were up 15.9% compared with the same time last year, according to the latest USAppleTracker survey from the U.S. Apple Association.

U.S. fresh apples in storage on June 1 were up 15.9% compared with the same time last year, according to the latest USAppleTracker survey from the U.S. Apple Association.

The survey said fresh apple holdings on June 1 totaled 32.1-million-bushel cartons, 15.9% more than the inventories reported for last June. Processing apple holdings totaled 12.3 million bushels, 1% less than last year on June 1.

Total apples in storage on June 1 were 44.4 million bushels, 10.7% more than last June’s total of 40.1 million bushels and 8.3% above the 5-year average for that date.

Fresh apple holdings by variety by bushel cartons, with percent change compared with a year ago:

  • All fresh varieties: 32.1 million cartons, up 15.9%;
  • Ambrosia: 555,822 cartons, up 32%;
  • Cosmic Crisp: 1.48 million cartons, up 896%;
  • Fuji: 3.05 million cartons, down 24%;
  • Gala: 4.21 million, down 14%;
  • Golden delicious: 1.29 million cartons, up 12%;
  • Granny smith: 5.7 million cartons, up 88%;
  • Honeycrisp: 3.92 million cartons: up 38%;
  • Pink Lady/cripps pink: 2.74 million cartons, up 26%; and
  • Red delicious: 6.93 million cartons, down 5%.

The average fob price for Washington apples the week of June 11 was $28.51 per carton, off about 10 cents per carton compared with the previous week but 8 cents per carton higher than the same week a year ago.

The USDA reported that imported apples accounted for about 5% of the total U.S. apple supply in early June, about the same as a year ago.
