Big gains reported in potato exports to Mexico

U.S. fresh potato exports to Mexico are on fire.

From September 2023 to August 2024, U.S. fresh potato exports to Mexico climbed by 20% compared with the previous season.

USDA trade numbers showed the value of U.S. fresh potato exports to Mexico for the period was $131.9 million, up from $110.3 million the previous season and up 79% from two years ago.

The total value of U.S. fresh potato exports from September 2023 to August 2024 was $335.3 million, up 1% from the previous year.

The total quantity of U.S. fresh potato shipments in 2023-24 reached 581,695 metric tons, up 3% from the previous year.

At $576.50 per metric ton in 2023-24 compared with $588 per metric ton the previous year, the unit value for U.S. fresh potato exports was off 2% in the latest 12-month period.

Mexico accounted for 39% of total U.S. fresh potato exports in the 2023-24 season, followed in importance by Canada (21%), Japan (6%) and South Korea (6%). U.S. fresh potatoes were shipped to more than 50 countries in 2023-24, according to the USDA.

Below is U.S. fresh potato export value by country, with percent changed compared with the same period the previous season:

  • Mexico — $131.9 million, up 20%.
  • Canada — $71.6 million, down 29%.
  • Japan — $19.2 million, down 8%.
  • South Korea — $19.1 million, up 30%.
  • Taiwan — %15.1 million, down 8%.
  • Honduras — $15.04 million, down 10%.
  • Dominican Republic — $12.6 million, up 90%.
  • Philippines — $12.3 million, up 15%.
  • Guatemala — $9.7 million, up 69%.
  • Malaysia — $4.9 million, up 11%.
