Parma, Idaho-based Owyhee Produce expects stable onion volume compared with year-ago levels.
Shay Myers, CEO, said in late May that the company was actively sourcing from California, Arizona and New Mexico.
He said the grower-shipper-marketer offers year-round onions.
“We remove the friction for our customers by transitioning from district to district,” Myers said, noting that the marketer also offers organic onions.
“For the summer, we continue to grow out sweet onion program,” Myers said.
“Summer is a great time for sweet onion demand, and we are growing that category to meet demand.”
While foodservice demand is increasing, tight truck availability has made it difficult to cover some Eastern destinations, he said.
Price increases for packaging and pallets are drawing notice, Myers said.
Interest is evident from buyers on sustainable packaging, but Myers said inflation in packaging costs could delay innovation toward sustainability.
