U.S. fresh apple holdings on Nov. 1 were 36% more than reported last November and 21% more than the November five-year average.

U.S. fresh apple holdings on Nov. 1 totaled 140 million (42-pound) cartons, 36% more than reported last November and 21% more than the November five-year average.

The USAppleTracker, published by the U.S. Apple Association, also said the total number of apples in storage on Nov. 1 was 190.7 million cartons, 32% more than last November’s total of 144 million bushels and 20% more than the five-year average for that date.

The expanded supply was reflected in lower shipping point prices compared with a year ago. The average shipping point price for all U.S. apples on Nov. 11 was $29.20, down 8% from $31.83 per carton at the same time a year ago.

By selected variety, fresh holdings by cartons, with percentage change compared with last year, were as follows:

  • Total — 140.2 million cartons, up 36%.
  • Cosmic Crisp — 7.44 million cartons, up 41%.
  • Envy — 4.05 million cartons (no comparison available from last season).
  • Fuji — 14.8 million cartons, up 17%.
  • Gala — 24.1 million cartons, up 11%.
  • Golden delicious — 6.58 million cartons, up 51%.
  • Granny smith: — 18.3 million cartons, up 65%.
  • Honeycrisp — 19.9 million cartons, up 84%.
  • Pink Lady/cripps pink — 7.99 million cartons, up 48%.
  • Red delicious — 22.5 million cartons, up 46%.
