USDA announces large fresh apple and pear purchase

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced a $1.5 million purchase of fresh apples and pears for the agency’s nutrition programs.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced a $1.5 million purchase of fresh apples and pears for the agency’s nutrition programs.

According to a summary document, the purchases totaling 57,000 cartons of fruit were made on an f.o.b. destination basis, with deliveries to be made from Jan. 3 to April 28.

The USDA said 3,696 cases of gala Apples were not awarded due to pricing considerations.

The purchases were:

  • Empire apples, 40-pound cartons: 4,620 cartons: $24.81 to $30 per carton;
  • Apples (no variety designated), 12-3-pound bags: 16,600 cartons: $17.60 to $24.02 per carton;
  • Fuji apples, 40-pound cartons: 7,392 cartons: $23.77 to $27.08 per carton;
  • Galas apples, 40-pound cartons: 6,468.000 cartons: $24.69 to $27.58 per carton;
  • Granny smith apples, 40-pound cartons: 7,392 cartons, $26.23 to $29.90 per carton;
  • Red delicious apples, 40-pound cartons 4,620 cartons, $22.67 to $25.42 per carton; and
  • Pears, 12-3-pound packages: 10,780 cartons, $26.20 to $32.95 per carton.
