This week officially kicks off the Sumo Citrus season as the popular fruit appears in even more produce aisles for 2022.

Added distribution into new Target locations and all Meijer stores continues to launch Sumo Citrus into the mainstream, according to a news release. The mandarin brand has introduced new 2-pound[MT1] and 3-pound bags to deliver the fruit in a more convenient sharing format for families, sporting events[MT2] and workplace snacking, the release said.

Sumo Citrus season lasts from January through April.

“Our goal for this season is to increase opportunities for first-timers with more store locations and the new bags so more consumers will get the chance to experience” Sumo Citrus, Ron Steele, vice president of sales for Sumo Citrus, said in the release.

Sumo Citrus is harvested in California. The fruit is hard to miss in stores because of its bumpy, easy-to-peel skin and unique top knot. Underneath its exterior is an oversized, seedless mandarin.

According to nutrition information provided by the company in the release, a Sumo mandarin provides 163% of the recommended daily amount of vitamin C and 3 g of fiber.

“Last season proved that consumers are prioritizing their health and, increasingly, they’re turning to fresh, tasty fruits as a way to improve their diets and help boost their immune systems,” Scott Owens, Sumo Citrus general manager, said in the release. “This season, we’re excited to bring Sumo Citrus into these new store locations so more people can start the year off right.”
