Bobalu Berries, Oxnard, Calif., is donating strawberries to school children and families as they pick up meals at schools that have been shuttered due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The United Fresh Produce Association helped Bobalu Berries partners RC Jones and Bobby Jones connect with Oxnard school districts. The company donated berries that went to 4,000 families of elementary school students, and thousands of pounds also went to Oxnard High School students, according to a news release.

“We know there are still families that rely on school lunch every day to get them through difficult times,” Bobby Jones said in the release. “We are trying to make a difference providing fresh berries for each family to enjoy every week as we work through this crisis together.”

The coronavirus COVID-19 crisis is pushing demand for berries higher as Bobalu and other California strawberry companies begin to enter peak shipping periods. While Bobalu and other companies work to keep items on store shelves, they are also mindful of employees’ health.

“We are so impressed with our team in the field and how they are embracing the responsibility of serving as essential employees,” Bobby Jones said in the release.
