How popular can avocados get?

They are still rising in per capita consumption, so we don’t know just yet. Per capita utilization of avocados has quadrupled since 1980.

The chart below has per capita utilization numbers pulled from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s latest update in November.

Note the rapid rise of avocados, pineapples, grapes, and strawberries; peaches have not been as fortunate.

Here are the citrus numbers. They tell a story of decline in grapefruit because of obvious factors with canker and citrus greening. Fresh orange utilization has dipped while tangerines and mandarines have increased.

Finally, a chart showing imports as a percent of domestic disappearance. Big changes in several categories amidst a general trend of rising fruit imports.
