Domex Superfresh Growers, Yakima, Wash., saw growth in organic apples and pears, with galas and bartletts leading each category.

Organic apples saw a 5% increase in sales nationally, with galas representing 34% of organic apple sales in a 52-week period ending May 19, according to a Superfresh Growers news release. Bartletts represent 47.4% of organic pear sales, with close to $15 million in value. Total organic pear sales rose 7% over the past year.

After galas, here are the top organic apples:

  • Honeycrisp
  • Fuji
  • Granny Smith
  • Pink Lady

After bartletts, leading pear varieties are anjou and bosc, according to the release. The top three organic pear varieties represent almost 90% of organic pears.

Organic apple and pear harvests will begin in August, beginning with gala apples and bartlett and starkrimson pears.

Sales figures from the company is based on IRI Freshlook data, according to the release.

Superfresh Growers is exhibiting at the Organic Produce Summit, July 10-11 in Monterey, Calif.
