Of the 25 finalists in the United Fresh Produce Association’s Retail Produce Manager Awards program, five received extra recognition during the Retail-Foodservice Celebration.
At the June 12 event, these produce managers were recognized for the grand prize honor, receiving $1,000 each:
Michael Sockett, Gelson’s Market, Valley Village, Calif.;
Elaine Fong, Calgary Co-op, Calgary, Alberta;
Roman Teig, Hy-Vee Inc., Omaha, Neb.;
Baryn Hagood-Lund, Safeway Inc., Everett, Wash.; and
David Scarlett, Food City/K-V-A-T, Knoxville, Tenn.
“Produce managers are the face of our industry to the consumer,” Tom Stenzel, president and CEO of United Fresh, said in a news release. “Their creativity and positive interaction with customers grows produce sales and ultimately consumption of fruits and vegetables.
“This program is a powerful way to send a message to produce managers everywhere that we value what they do,” Stenzel said in the release.
For the fifth year, Dole sponsored the award program, which selects 25 produce managers, who along with a corporate management representative receive travel and other expenses and free registration to the show.
