South Mill Champs, Kennett Square, Pa., has acquired processor The Mushroom Company, Cambridge, Md.

The Mushroom company serves foodservice and industrial customers, with ingredients for soup, pizza and other food for quick- and casual-service restaurants, according to a news release. The company offers individually quick-frozen, canned, blanched, blended and roasting mushrooms and other vegetables.

“Over the last few years, SMC (South Mill Champs) has shown exceptional leadership in innovation and growth in the mushroom industry,” Dennis Newhard, president of The Mushroom Co., said in the release. “We look forward to supporting and further expanding SMC’s capabilities and product innovation.”

The facility retains under The Mushroom Co. banner and Newhard remains as president and general manager. South Mill Champs plans to expand capacity and capabilities at the Cambridge facility, in line with its growing North American operations, according to the news release.

“Our industry is experiencing strong growth as consumers continue to recognize the significant health and environmental benefits of mushrooms,” Newhard said in the release. “We believe the future is bright and this combination gives us the resources to continue to be an industry leader.”

South Mill Champs’ recent expansion includes a distribution center in Lakeland, Fla., in fall 2020, and acquisition of Loveday Mushroom Farms of Winnipeg, Manitoba, in summer 2020. South Mill Mushrooms merged with Canadian company Champs Mushrooms in early 2018.
