The 2022 Best Managed Companies have been announced.

Selected each year through a partnership between Deloitte and the Wall Street Journal, the list showcases both U.S. and Canadian Best Managed Companies using four award categories: new winners, best managed winners, gold standard winners and platinum club member winners.

Canada's 2022 Best Managed Companies included 29 new winners. To be named to the list, Canada companies are required to be Canadian-owned and managed and have annual revenues of more than $50 million.

"This year’s companies — including the program’s 29 new winners — highlight their strategic planning, adaptability and commitment to their communities as key factors contributing to their success on a global scale," according to a news release.

This year's U.S. Best Managed Companies included 51 private businesses with annual revenues of more than $250 million.

"These businesses are led by management teams excelling across the enterprise. When looking at their commitment to excellence, investment in their people and their focus on long-term [diversity, equity and inclusion], and sustainability initiatives, we were inspired by the scale and depth of their impact. We look forward to their future achievements," Jason Downing, vice chairman of Deloitte, said in the release.

Canadian-awarded companies included:

“We continue to live in interesting times, especially in the distribution industry. The Crawford team has again risen to the challenge to enhance our customers’ business performance. We are proud to be recognized again by the Best Managed Companies organization for what we do,” John Ashby, president of Crawford Packaging, said in the release.

U.S.-award companies included:

“We’re honored to be recognized as a U.S. Best Managed Company,” Todd Schnuck, Schnucks chairman and CEO, said in the release. “We accomplish our mission to nourish people’s lives through a shared strategic vision in our organization, as well as through meaningful philanthropy in our communities. I commend our leadership team for its commitment to our customers and teammates, ensuring we consistently execute on what matters most in our stores.”

Oppy, a 21-time Canada's best managed winner, received its 15 consecutive platinum club membership award this year.

“It’s an honor to be recognized as ‘best managed’ for so many years,” Chairman, CEO and Managing Partner John Anderson said in the release. “It’s especially meaningful this time around. We have persevered through extreme challenges in the last 12 months, and, like the rest of the industry, are bravely navigating our share of headwinds  — between supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, weather events, inflation and more. It’s a credit to the amazing team at Oppy that we stand where we do today.”

On another winning streak, for the 13th consecutive year, Mastronardi Produce received an award for Canada's best managed winner.

“We dedicate this achievement to our employees who truly drive our success as a company,” Paul Mastronardi, president and CEO of Mastronardi Produce, said in the release. “It is the passion of our people nationwide that secures our place as a global leader in greenhouse vegetable growing. We are honored to receive this award, and I’m excited to see what’s next for 'Flavor Nation,'” as the company refers to itself and its array of brands that include Sunset.
