Health authorities continue to investigate a multistate outbreak of cyclospora infections linked to Del Monte vegetable trays, and the case count is up to 144.

The Food and Drug Administration is still working to determine which item in the trays — broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, celery sticks or dill dip — is the vehicle for the outbreak, according to an update June 21. The FDA has been reviewing distribution and supplier information related to the trays as it searches for answers.

Illnesses have been reported in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Six people have been hospitalized. Onset dates range from May 14 to June 8.

Del Monte recalled on June 15 the products the FDA identified as the likely source of the outbreak — 6-ounce, 12-ounce and 28-ounce vegetable trays that were distributed to Kwik Trip, Kwik Star, Demond’s, Sentry, Potash, Meehan’s, Country Market, Food Max Supermarket and Peapod locations across Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota, according to the FDA. The trays recalled had “best by” dates of June 17 or earlier.
