Benson, NC: The North Carolina SweetPotato Commission (NCSPC) announced today the release of its School Foodservice Video series. The free videos are directed at school foodservice specialists and distributors and offer an introduction to North Carolina sweetpotatoes as a nutritious school menu option served in many variations.  The series gives an overview of NC’s State Vegetable, sweetpotatoes, from growing to ordering, buying, and storing sweetpotatoes, while highlighting the many nutritional benefits, and most importantly how to incorporate this superfood on school menus!

“The NC SweetPotato Commission is excited to see our vision of providing educational resources to our school nutritionists and foodservice professionals come to fruition,” said Michelle Grainger, Executive Director of the North Carolina SweetPotato Commission.  “North Carolina is the nation's largest producer of one of the world’s top superfoods and to have the opportunity to introduce sweetpotatoes to new generations through their stomachs by featuring sweetpotatoes on their school menus is not only exciting but also aligns entirely with the Commission’s mission. This project is one of many that we are currently managing – all highlighting the nutritional value and versatility of the sweetpotato. No matter whether a person is connected to the school foodservice industry or not, our website is full of resources and recipes for anyone looking to boost their daily intake of NC’s sweetest superfood!”

“Sweetpotatoes are a win-win for school nutrition programs,” said Heather Barnes, Marketing Specialist for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. “This nutritious vegetable is a low-cost way to meet the requirements of the red/orange subgroup. Its versatility gives nutrition staff many options on how to menu sweetpotatoes throughout the school year and in summer feeding programs.”

This new series features four videos that provide an introduction to North Carolina sweetpotatoes.  These free NCSPC Foodservice Videos are available here. For more information on the videos, or content, visit www.ncsweetpotatoes.com.
