To combat microbial spoilage, Nature’s Frequencies has introduced the Food Freshness Card — a passive, U.S.-manufactured technology designed to extend the usable life of fruits, vegetables and floral products by slowing down natural decay.

The Science: Slowing Decay Without Chemicals or Power

Addressing the core science behind the device, Mike Hassler, inventor of the Food Freshness Card and the patent holder, says that the mechanism works passively alongside natural decay vectors rather than attempting a complete kill.

“Produce spoilage is largely driven by mold, fungi and bacteria that naturally multiply over time,” Hassler says. “Rather than trying to kill these microorganisms, the Food Freshness Card is designed to slow their growth and delay visible spoilage. The technology is completely passive, requiring no battery, electricity, chemicals or direct food contact.”

“Through a proprietary and patented process, the material within the card is designed to interact with ambient electromagnetic energy, similar in concept to how a passive RFID tag interacts with electromagnetic fields without its own power source,” Mike Hassler says.

He notes that peer-reviewed research supports this approach: “Research has shown that electromagnetic fields can influence microbial growth and cellular activity ... For example, a 2011 study published in ‘International Journal of Radiation Biology’ reported reduced growth rates and morphological changes in multiple bacterial strains exposed to an electromagnetic field.”

Complementing Existing Cold-Chain Operations

For growers, shippers and retailers, seamless integration into existing supply-chain infrastructure is critical. Hassler emphasizes that the technology is designed to enhance, not replace, standard handling.

“Temperature, humidity and airflow have a major influence on produce deterioration regardless of the Food Freshness Card. The card is intended to supplement, not replace, normal cold-chain practices such as temperature control, humidity management, sanitation, ventilation and commodity-specific handling,” Mike Hassler says. “Because the card does not release a chemical, gas or other active agent, it is not dependent on airflow to distribute its effect. Normal variations in humidity and airflow are therefore not expected to materially change its coverage area. The card has been shown to remain effective across a wide range of real-world environments ... High-ethylene producers such as apples and bananas still require appropriate temperature, ventilation and ethylene management. The Food Freshness Card is designed to work alongside these practices, providing an additional layer of freshness protection.”

Field Data Shows Fast ROI Across Produce Departments

From a financial perspective, commercial deployments are yielding measurable returns. RJ Hassler, president of Nature’s Frequencies, says recent commercial grocery performance metrics demonstrate significant bottom-line impact.

“Commercial grocery programs have documented produce-shrink reductions in the approximately 23% to 47% range,” RJ Hassler says. “Typical produce-department installations utilize approximately 100 to 160 Food Freshness Cards, depending on the size and configuration of the department. The technology is deployed across the produce department rather than being limited to a single commodity, including produce prep areas, walk-in coolers, wet racks, reach-in cases, dry tables and other storage and display areas.”

Discussing actual retail field data, Hassler shares anonymized metrics illustrating a noticeable drop in waste.

“In documented commercial retail deployments, Retailer A reduced baseline shrink from 2.8% to 1.9%, representing an average reduction of 32.9%,” RJ Hassler says. “Retailer B saw baseline shrink decrease from 3.8% down to 2.1%, achieving a 45.6% average reduction.”

He adds that these operational savings translate directly to short payback periods, saying, “ROI is generally achieved within approximately one to four months, depending on deployment size, baseline shrink and operating conditions. The reduction in shrink directly correlates to the revenue figures based on the initial shrink baseline and reduction.”
