Subway is stepping up for veggies

I got an email this week from a publicist for Subway, who pointed out that Subway is making a case for veggies to its many customers.

I got an email this week from a publicist for Subway, who pointed out that Subway is making a case for veggies to its many customers.

From the note:

SUBWAY has found that 84% of Americans aren’t meeting the USDA recommended minimum number of daily vegetable servings (four servings / two cups). As National Eat Your Vegetables Day (Friday, June 17th) is almost upon us, SUBWAY continues to celebrate being the nutritional leader in the quick service restaurant (QSR) industry by offering up more vegetables than any of its competitors. SUBWAY has 10 vegetable varieties available in unlimited quantities on any SUBWAY sandwich, including cucumbers, green bell peppers, lettuce, red onions, spinach, tomatoes, banana peppers, jalapenos, black olives and pickles.

Guests can choose from millions of seemingly endless handcrafted sandwich combinations to create their own SUBWAY sandwich. Additionally, every six-inch SUBWAY sandwich made to specification offers guests two full servings of vegetables, nearly half the adult recommended daily intake requirement. SUBWAY continues to strive to encourage consumers to eat more vegetables and to promote healthier eating.

If there is a fast food outfit to be commended on the occasion of “National Eat Your Vegetables Day,” it is not a stretch to say that Subway deserves a high mention. Huffington Post coverage from 2014 noted that Subway use 16 acres of lettuce of day at its 40,000 restaurants in 102 countries. Another jaw dropper is that Subway makes about 320,000 sandwiches every hour. That’s a lot of those 10 assorted veggies. Next time I contemplate the always-tempting cheeseburger combo, I should choose instead to “eat my vegetables.” Thanks for the reminder, Subway!
