As the U.S. faces its largest foodborne illness outbreak in more than three decades, concerns surrounding produce safety have reached a critical high point.
Public health officials are currently investigating a cyclospora outbreak tied to contaminated iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CDC has confirmed more than 1,900 illnesses across nine states linked to this specific outbreak, while thousands of additional cases remain under investigation — including another 500 cases reported in Michigan alone in a single morning.
Amid growing consumer anxiety and broad media advisories warning shoppers away from packaged salads, indoor greenhouse growers and controlled environment agriculture (CEA) advocates are stepping forward to provide clarity. Their message is focused on transparency, structural safety advantages and open communication — all while maintaining respect for the rigorous safety efforts of traditional field growers.
Indoor-grown produce has already gained significant ground in the marketplace. According to Tom Stenzel, executive director of Controlled Environment Agriculture Alliance, indoor-grown salads now account for 8% of all salads sold at retail nationally. In the Northeast, that figure is closer to 20%.
“In a time like this, it’s important for these officials to accurately define risks and not push consumers away from healthy and safe produce,” Stenzel says. “In this case, telling consumers not to consume any bagged salads was broader than necessary.”
Understanding the Indoor Advantage: Water, Enclosures and Ozone
Unlike bacterial pathogens such as E. coli or salmonella, Cyclospora cayetanensis is a parasite primarily transmitted through human contamination and environmental water vectors, as detailed in FDA’s cyclospora action plan and CDC’s cyclosporiasis guidance. Because open-field crops often rely on surface water sources such as open irrigation canals, rivers or ponds, they face inherent exposure pathways from agricultural runoff or animal activity that are difficult to completely seal off.
Controlled environment agriculture fundamentally alters that risk profile. By moving production inside, indoor farms eliminate major environmental contamination vectors, including wildlife activity, soil hazards and untreated runoff.
At Salad Days Produce, a hydroponic greenhouse operation based in Flora, Miss., food safety is designed directly into the physical infrastructure.
“We start by using a municipal-tested drinking water supply, so that is our source water,” says Leigh Bailey, owner of Salad Days Produce. “Beyond that, we have ozone generation, so we are ozonating our water, which is a great way to kill and eliminate many pathogens.”
While cyclospora has historically been difficult to control because it is resistant to standard chemical sanitizers, recent findings from USDA’s Agricultural Research Service demonstrate that treating water with aqueous ozone significantly suppresses the parasite’s ability to mature into an infectious state.
“Cyclospora is kind of a new thing to people right now; it’s not one of the typical E. coli, salmonella or listeria outbreaks that you hear about more often,” Bailey says. “It’s been a convenient byproduct to find out that specifically cyclospora is affected by ozone. Besides that, ozonation super-oxygenates the water, so the roots of the plants are very happy about that in general.”
Beyond water treatment, indoor systems operate in closed loops, carefully monitoring and treating recirculating water rather than relying on external environmental water bodies.
“Although there’s no such thing as zero risk,” says Jennifer McEntire, founder of Food Safety Strategy LLC, “considering that one possible route for cyclospora is the use of water that has been contaminated with raw sewage, the likelihood is lower in CEA operations due to the sources of water used, mainly municipal water, and the physical protection from flooding or other water intrusion events.”
Navigating Outbreak News and Restoring Consumer Trust
When broad foodborne illness warnings hit the news, blanket statements like “avoid packaged salads” can create widespread confusion among consumers. Indoor growers across the nation have turned to social media and direct buyer communication to explain why their products remain safe and unimpacted.
Across the CEA sector, major greenhouse producers have shared clear updates on social media platforms:
- Gotham Greens reassured its Instagram followers by detailing its enclosed greenhouse protections, continuous water monitoring, single-facility harvest-to-pack workflows and strict routine testing protocols.
- Revol Greens highlighted on Facebook that its products were not part of the investigation, pointing to its treated water, automated harvesting that minimizes human handling and controlled facilities in Minnesota and Texas.
- Little Leaf Farms posted on Instagram emphasizing its state-of-the-art greenhouses and treated irrigation water, assuring customers that its packaged salads were completely safe.
Stenzel emphasizes that education and accurate risk communication are vital during an active investigation.
“The alliance and our members are talking with retailers about how they can communicate the benefits of greenhouse and indoor-grown produce to shoppers,” he says. “Consumers are choosing indoor-grown produce because of its freshness and quality. Whether field- or indoor-grown, I know all produce companies are committed to food safety as our top priority. At the same time, shoppers want to know how their produce is grown, and we need to be transparent about our production practices.”
To address regulatory clarity during public health events, the CEA Alliance recently hosted a joint webinar with the Association of Food and Drug Officials, connecting FDA officials and health regulators from more than 30 states directly with indoor producers.

Local Traceability: From Greenhouse to Shelf in 24 Hours
In addition to water safety and environmental controls, regional greenhouse operations offer an added layer of supply chain transparency: speed and traceability.
As retail buyers seek dependable, verified sources during supply disruptions, regional greenhouse growers are seeing significant surges in demand.
“One of the big questions we get from buyers is whether we are co-packing any product from other farms, and that is a big ‘no,’” Bailey says. “Everything that we sell is grown right here in this one facility, so we’re not bringing in anything where we don’t know the origin.”
Because regional greenhouses operate near the markets they supply, produce moves quickly from harvesting to grocery shelves without traveling thousands of miles across multistep distribution channels.
“Right now, our orders are so big that we are packing and delivering sometimes the same day or within 24 hours,” Bailey says. “Product is hitting shelves within 24 hours of being harvested. You’ve got a fresh, safe, clean, pesticide-free product that didn’t have to ride on a truck for 2,000 miles.”
A Collaborative Future for Produce Safety
While no farming method — indoor or outdoor — can claim absolute zero risk, CEA offers a distinct, measurable set of structural barriers against environmental parasites like cyclospora. By combining treated closed-loop water systems, enclosed physical structures, automated handling and rapid regional distribution, greenhouse growers are giving retailers and consumers the transparent answers they need.
