Happy Dirt celebrates 20 years of championing organic farmers

The company said the gathering was a testament to its mission of bridging the food system by connecting consumers with the farmers who grow healthy, sustainable produce.

Durham, N.C.-based organic grower-shipper Happy Dirt said it marked 20 years of supporting organic farmers during a Sept. 21 celebration.

The event at Weldon Mills Distillery in Weldon, N.C., had more than 140 guests, including farmer-partners, customers, staff and early impact investors, according to a news release. The company said the gathering was a testament to its mission of bridging the food system by connecting consumers with the farmers who work tirelessly to grow healthy, sustainable produce.

Some of the distinguished guests included Kevin Doty, vice president of produce and floral for Whole Foods Market; two-time James Beard Award-winning chef Ashley Christensen; Bridgette Thurston, category manager for The Fresh Market; and Chris Fuss, vice president of Foster Caviness Co. Inc., the release said.

Happy Dirt said the true VIPs of the evening were its organic farmer-partners, whose dedication and expertise have been integral to the company’s success.

“When you see a James Beard Award-winning chef or a vice president from Whole Foods Global shake hands and chat with the organic farmers who grew the sweetpotatoes or kale they’ve purchased, it’s pure magic,” said Taylor Meadows, Happy Dirt’s marketing manager. “I witnessed so many beautiful moments that showcased the genuine relationships Happy Dirt has built over the past two decades.”

The celebration featured a North Carolina-inspired menu created in collaboration with local food and drink vendors, the release said. Guests enjoyed custom cocktails from Weldon Mills Distillery, made with organic muscadines grown by Happy Dirt farmer-partner T.Y. Baker, and Jabin, a local beverage company. The seasonal dessert included sweet potato pie made with organic sweetpotatoes from farmer-owner Randall Watkins Jr., apple ice cream from Lively Orchard and sorbet made with organic muscadines from farmer-owner Owen Rouse.
