California Giant received TRUE Zero Waste certification

The corporate headquarters of California Giant Berry Farms, Watsonville, Calif., has received Gold under the TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) Zero Waste certification program.

The Gold certification recognizes the company’s diversion of 91% of its office waste from landfill and other waste outlets in the past year.

TRUE, administered by Green Business Certification Inc., validates businesses’ efforts to define, pursue and achieve zero-waste goals, according to the release. With TRUE’s approach and guidance from Measure to Improve LLC, California Giant implemented permanent improvements to reduce use of materials encourage reuse and recycling.

“I am absolutely thrilled that California Giant has achieved this Zero Waste Certification. Especially during these unprecedented times, it is an outstanding display of dedication from our California Giant Family,” Eric Valenzuela, director of food safety and sustainability, said in the release.

“Over the past year we documented, trained and literally climbed into dumpsters to reach the target diversion rate,” Valenzuela said in the release. “Under the stellar guidance of Measure to Improve, the staff worked really hard to achieve this goal as part of our overall arch of sustainability.”

TRUE Zero Waste certification notes that businesses have diverted at least 90% of solid non-hazardous waste from landfills. Other requirements consider leadership, employee education, communication and commitment from all employees to participate.

“California Giant is focused on having a sustainable business that cares for the environment and the hardworking people that make it possible,” Joe Barsi, president, said in the release. “This certification validates our efforts and will keep us all accountable to maintain and continue to improve upon these results moving forward.”
