Netherlands-based PerfoTec has found an improved approach to modified atmosphere packaging technology, according to the company.

“We’ve found out that MAP packaging for fresh produce isn’t enough,” said Elma Hadziomerovic, marketing communications manager.

“There is still the issue of moisture, which causes fungus and bacteria development. Now we’ve developed MAP packaging that includes a solution for this problem as well.”

The COVID-19 pandemic illustrated the hygienic appeal of produce packaging, Hadziomerovic said, in addition to the way that packaging can help facilitate online sales.

“There is more need for the packaging which can keep the produce fresh for a longer period,” she said, to give shelf-life extension without quality losses.

Consumers are also becoming more aware of environmental issues and the need for sustainability, she said.

With PerfoTec C+ Film, the company combines a special bio-based, compostable and printable film with its laser perforation technology to create the perfect packaging for fresh produce at retail packaging, Hadziomerovic said.

PerfoTec, she said, also has a great solution and transport and storage bulk packaging that extends the shelf life of produce. The PerfoTec LinerBag, also called “controlled atmosphere liner bags” by customers, allows most produce to be shipped by sea, or truck transport, rather than by air, Hadziomerovic said.

“These two packaging types (the PerfoTec LinerBag and PerfoTec C+ Film), combined with our MAP laser technology, are not only extending the shelf-life and freshness of fresh produce, but they’re also reducing the carbon footprint (sea freight versus airfreight) and food waste (longer shelf-life), which means preventing quality losses, so (it) saves costs,” she said.

PerfoTec’s O2Control Gas Flush System also can play a big role in shelf-life extension of produce, she said, particularly iceberg and romaine lettuce.
