Arctic apple company hires director of research, regulatory affairs

Okanagan Specialty Fruits, Summerland, British Columbia, has hired Muhammad Tahir as director of research and regulatory affairs.

Okanagan Specialty Fruits, Summerland, British Columbia, has hired Muhammad Tahir as director of research and regulatory affairs.

Tahir, whose background is in corporate research and academia, succeeds John Armstrong, who is retiring after 20 years with Okanagan Specialty Fruits. Armstrong spearheaded the research and development of the genetically engineered non-browning Arctic apples grown and marketed by Okanagan Specialty Fruits, according to a news release.

Tahir has worked for agricultural science companies and developed research strategies and managed research teams, “delivering viable and profitable commercial products as crop varieties or hybrids and working with regulatory agencies,” according to the release. He has taught and researched areas related to genetics, biotechnology and crop breeding.

Neal Carter, president and founder of Okanagan Specialty Fruits, said in the release Tahir will work to expand the variety of Arctic apples, along with “other products in development.”
