The University of California-Davis, through the College of Agriculture and Environmental Science, is recognizing individuals with the Awards of Distinction, including Harold McClarty, founder of HMC Farms,

A celebration is scheduled for Oct. 4 at UC-Davis campus, according to a news release.

McClarty, a fifth-generation farmer, built up HMC Farms over the years, focusing on tree fruit and grapes. His family has farmed in the area since 1887, according to the release.

McClarty established the company with the original 40 acres the family farmed on. Since then, the company has grown into a vertically integrated tree fruit and table grape supplier with growing areas in California, Mexico, Mexico and Peru, according to the release.

“Harold McClarty is one of the most forward-thinking individuals in California agriculture who consistently honors his modest beginnings by giving back to many worthy causes, particularly to those that help in educating our young people,” Berry Bedwell, president of the California Agricultural Leadership Foundation, said in the release. “He is a thoughtful, humble man whose opinion is valued by countless others.”

McClarty has been a University of California-Davis Foundation Trustee for six years, and the family supports university projects, including the Agricultural Sustainability Institute’s Adopt an Acre program, according to the release.
