The Ontario Produce Marketing Association and Toronto Wholesalers Produce Association are delivering 250 boxes with fresh produce to an isolated First Nation Community.

The boxes will be flown to far North-Western Ontario Dec. 20 to distribute to families in North Caribou Lake/Weagamow First Nation, according to a news release.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are rare in the remote fly-in community, according to the release, and each family will receive a 45-pound box with 18 different donated fruits and vegetables from farmers across Ontario and North America.

The OPMA and Toronto wholesaler groups will pack the boxes at the Ontario Food Terminal in Etobicoke.
A questionnaire on nutrition security in remote areas will be in each box of produce.

“It’s great to see people from across the Ontario produce industry come together to bring joy and amazing fresh produce to families in the North Caribou Lake/Weagamow First Nation community,” Michelle Broom, OPMA president, said in the release.

If the project is successful, the OPMA hopes to continue a program of regular shipments to fly-in communities.
