Packer 25 2021 — Priscilla Lleras-Bush

The produce industry is a relationship industry. I’m most grateful for my group of network contacts, associates, peers and friends who’ve been growing since 1991.

How did you get your start in the produce industry?

I worked for a major airline in Miami in 1991 that transported a high volume of produce to and from Latin American, Europe and the United States. It was there that I received my training, exposure and passion for the best industry in the world: the fresh produce industry. I networked with the best industry professionals among produce growers, exporters and importers from all parts of the world.

What roles have you held during you career?

I began my career at American Airlines’ headquarters on the financial planning side of the business in Dallas. From there, I was promoted within the Cargo Division at American Airlines Cargo as a sales manager for perishables. After resigning there, I started a consulting company.

How would you describe your current role?

For 30 years now, I’ve been fortunate to continue my work within the produce industry. I assist and organize associations and help companies think through their big goals, business plans, promotion initiatives and special projects. The work involves everything from negotiating contracts and organizing executive boards to marketing, promotion and regulatory agency lobbying.

What do you hope to accomplish/contribute through that role?

I like to bring results for my clients and enable them to succeed and expand their businesses.

What industry groups are you involved with?

Peruvian Asparagus Importers Association, Guatemalan Produce Trade Association and various produce industry committees.

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

The produce industry is a relationship industry. I’m most grateful for my group of network contacts, associates, peers and friends who’ve been growing since 1991.

What does leadership mean to you?

Working with integrity, professionalism and passion. Leading by example!

Who are some of your industry mentors?

So many industry leaders have inspired and challenged me with their drive and motivation. They’ve shown me that it’s possible to keep driving the ball down the field, especially when it’s difficult. Just never give up!

What’s a little-known or fun fact about you?

I love yoga!

What’s your favorite efficiency hack?

Sometimes you have to say “no” to some good things so you’re able to say “yes” to the best thing.

If you had to pick one fruit or vegetable to eat every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I couldn’t just pick one: asparagus for my fresh vegetable and mangoes for my fresh fruit.
