Evans Fruit has remodeled its Yakima plant with a new, 40-lane advanced packing line, said Scott Hennessey, sales representative for Evans Fruit, Yakima, Wash.

As of early September, Evans Fruit has started to pick its gala crop, with quality good and volume slightly below estimates, Hennessey said. Evans Fruit has added a couple of varieties to its portfolio this year, including Evercrisp and sunrise magic.

With a view toward keeping its customers supplied with high-quality fruit throughout the 2022-2023 season, Evans Fruit will offer most major varieties into July, with granny smith and red delicious apples extending into August.

The Cosmic Crisp variety garnered what Hennessey called a “decent” market in the 2021-2022 season, with hopes for even more traction for the 2022-2023 season.

High ocean freight costs and reduced service to some ports have made exports more difficult than in past years, Hennessey said.
