Green Circles Farm readies for sweet corn

Sweet corn from Bainbridge, Ga.-based Green Circles Farm is expected by about May 15, said Lacey Richardson, packinghouse manager.

She said shipments will continue close to Thanksgiving. The firm offers tray pack sweet corn options from its packing shed, she said.

U.S. Department of Agriculture shipment figures show the top month for Georgia sweet corn shipments in 2016 was June, when 65% of the state’s annual sweet corn volume was shipped.

J&S Produce predicts strong volume

With 50 growers in 15 counties in Georgia, J&S Produce will have good volume of vegetables in the spring, summer and fall, said Joey Johnson, president and co-owner of growers’ agent J&S Produce, Mount Vernon, Ga.

The firm handles Vidalia onions, green beans, yellow squash, eggplant, hot peppers and other commodities, he said.

Despite the late start, Johnson predicted the firm will have good supply this spring and summer.

Leger & Son looks for strong watermelon volume

Georgia seedless watermelons for Leger & Son should hit the market by mid-June and run strong through mid-July, said Jordan Carter, director of sales and marketing for Leger & Son, Cordell, Ga.

Moore & Porter anticipates good squash volume

Squash volume should start in early May for Moore & Porter Produce of Thomasville Inc., Thomasville, Ga., said James Towell, salesman for the Thomasville, Ga.-based company. Shipments of squash are expected to continue through early July, he said.
