Highline Mushrooms is making a big sustainability move, says Devon Kennedy, national marketing manager for the Leamington, Ontario-based marketer.

“We recently took a huge step in sustainability by rolling out clear rPET tills and recyclable films,” Kennedy said. “The clear tills provide visibility of our quality on shelf and showcases our clean mushrooms to consumers. Over the next few months, we will transition the majority of our packaging to clear tills.”

The clear till packaging is 100% recyclable and provides visibility of the product, Kennedy said.

“Consumers shop with their eyes, so being able to flip the package over and see all the product inside adds immense value to the consumer,” he said. “Our whole and sliced mushrooms are available in 8-ounce, 16-ounce and 24-ounce packages, offering quick grab-and-go convenience for consumers.

Highline Mushrooms says it has farms strategically located across Canada, growing both organic and conventional mushrooms and ship across North America and to Japan.

New item

Kennedy said that specialty mushrooms have seen an increase in demand as more people cook at home and try new recipes.

“Many restaurants are also incorporating specialty mushrooms which introduce consumers to new varieties,” he said. “We recently launched White Flat mushrooms, which are similar to a portabella mushroom but are the traditional white variety. They are fantastic grilled on the barbecue, as they absorb the flavors they are cooked with. They can also be used to eliminate bread and reduce carbohydrates by using a White Flat as toast for avocado toast or topped with an egg.”

Kennedy said Highline Mushrooms hopes to see an increase in consumption of White Flats, especially in the summer months. In the winter, Highline Mushrooms is seeing the combination of criminis and portabellas performing well, he said.
