Keystone Fruit Marketing has been an integral part of the onion supply chain from Peru for over 30 years, says Matthew Gideon, sales and commodity manager for the Greencastle, Pa.-based marketer.
For the 2023-24 season, Keystone’s supply of Peruvian onions started the season with similar acreage in the ground and under contract compared with last season.
“The Peruvian sweet onion is one of our most well-known and loyal commodity offerings from Keystone,” Gideon said. “We take great pride in our Peruvian Mayan Sweet onions and look forward to delivering them to our various customers across North America.”
Harvest started in June and the Peruvian onion supply will continue for Keystone through the beginning of 2024. The main two growing regions for Keystone are the Ica (southern) and Huaura (northern) areas of Peru, Gideon said.
“We pack in our Mayan Sweet label and will use that label for all of our Peruvian onions this fall,” he said. “We pack in various consumer packs and in bulk offerings, all in the Mayan Sweet brand.”
Keystone brings its onions to various East Coast and West Coast ports in the U.S., he said.
