Troutdale, Ore.-based Strebin Farms has added organic yellow and red onions to its program that kicks off in September out of Yerington, Nev., said Dan Strebin, an owner of the company and head of sales.

The organic program is not a high-volume deal, but it fills a niche in certain markets, he said.

“We can mix some organic on trucks for customers throughout the week,” Strebin said. “We’re not after straight truckloads of business on organics.”

Strebin Farms sources organic onions out of its location in California’s Imperial Valley as well.

The company also is installing automated packing equipment for onions at its Yerington facility.

The new equipment is expected to be installed when new-season shipments begin Sept. 1, Strebin said.
