Sumo Citrus shares plans to celebrate upcoming season

Giveaways, promotions and more will mark the start of the season, which officially runs from January to April.

Sumo Citrus said says it has big plans the upcoming season of the fruit known for its large size, sweet taste, easy-to-peel skin and top knot.

While the season officially starts in January, fruit will hit stores earlier in December, according to a news release.

Sumo Citrus said it has special promotions planned to mark the fifth season, including:

  • Peel Away to Japan sweepstakes — This season, Sumo Citrus will host a sweepstakes that where consumers can win a trip to Japan.
  • Tastemonial tour — Sumo Citrus will pop up in key markets around the U.S., including Los Angeles and Chicago. As part of the tour, Sumo Citrus lovers can nominate their university, workplace, etc., for a chance to receive a fruit delivery, encouraging mass sharing of the mandarin.
  • Limited-edition merchandise — Sumo Citrus will celebrate the season with limited-edition items ranging from hoodies and beanies to T-shirts and tote bags.
  • Partnerships — Sumo Citrus will launch several exclusive co-branded products and partnerships in 2025.

Derived from the satsuma, orange and mandarin citrus varieties, Sumo Citrus was originally cultivated in Japan in the 1970s by a single grower who set out to develop the “perfect citrus fruit,” the release said. The fruit became known as the “Dekopon” in Japan referring to its distinctive top knot, and it eventually made its way to California’s Central Valley where only trained growers who know its unique characteristics can cultivate it, according to the release.

“The fifth season is something that everyone can rally around, bringing people together to celebrate the joy of Sumo Citrus no matter where they are,” said Sunnia Gull, vice president of marketing for Sumo Citrus. “Fans of the brand look forward to Sumo Citrus season every year and we wanted to create a core moment that leans into the excitement and exclusivity of a specific season. While it’s fleeting, that’s what makes it so special. We hope that fans enjoy taking part in this collective experience and make the most of the sweetest season of the year.”

The 2025 Sumo Citrus season will run through April, while supplies last, with pricing starting at $3.99 per pound, the release said. The fruit will be available at retailers across North America and sold individually as well as in 2- and 3-pound bags.
