Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, says that when the company launched its same-day delivery service in August, the company said it would reach more than 2,300 cities and towns by the end of the year. In a video announcement on the online retailer’s website, Herrington says the company has now expanded its services to meet that milestone.

First launching in Seattle, Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, Miami and New York City, Amazon has now added Boise, Idaho; Salt Lake City, Utah; Fort Collins, Colo.; Omaha, Neb.; Sugar Land, Texas; Des Moines, Iowa; Kennesaw, Ga.; and Gaithersburg, Md., to its same-day perishable delivery services.

The online retailer says it plans to continue to expand this service to more cities and towns in the future.

“We’re making great progress in the areas where we’ve launched this,” he says. “Out of the millions of items available with same-day delivery, nine of our top 10 best sellers are now fresh grocery items. Bananas are our No. 1 seller nationwide, and customers are also loving apples, avocados, limes and berries.”

Amazon says its top 10 items include

  1. Bananas
  2. Haas avocados
  3. Strawberries
  4. Honeycrisp apples
  5. Limes
  6. Blueberries
  7. Blackberries
  8. Organic bananas
  9. Navel oranges
  10. Bathroom tissue

The retailer says perishable grocery sales have grown 30 times since January, and Herrington says those customers who use Amazon’s same-day delivery service shop more frequently with the online retailer.

“They are loving the convenience of shopping this way for groceries,” he says. “Those who add fresh groceries to their same-day orders are returning to shop twice as often as those who don’t, and this time of the year, they’re seeing how convenient it is to combine holiday gift shopping with grocery orders.”

Amazon says its freshness guarantee also applies to its same-day perishable delivery service. The company says this guarantee provides customers with peace of mind.

“We believe shopping for fresh groceries should be as convenient as shopping for anything else on Amazon,” Herrington says.
