The New York State Apple Marketing Order advisory board is seeking proposals to make New York’s apple industry more competitive.
The proposals could also detail new or emerging markets, or suggest innovative promotions to increase the sale and consumption of New York apples, according to a news release. Proposals are due April 12.
The board would pay for proposals from a budget of about $2 million collected annually from apple growers.
The AMO board is a group of New York apple industry representatives appointed by the commissioner of the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets. Its purpose is to provide the department with recommendations on annual priorities and funding levels for contracting.
The board is interested in projects that:
- Identify East Coast opportunities for New York apples and offer strategies to better position New York apples in the markets;
- Determine apple purchasing preferences and decision drivers of larger retailers;
- Explore market opportunities for fresh or processed New York apples procured by schools and/or institutions;
- Identify market opportunities created by the growing craft beverage industry;
- Identify underserved export markets and evaluate opportunities for shipping apples to them; and
- Provide up-to-date nutritional information on apple consumption and strategies for communicating this to consumers.
