Officially recognized on NationalToday.com, National Opal Apple Day is Dec. 9.

“Opals and family time are the highlight of our holiday season,” Chuck Zeutenhorst, vice president of sales and marketing for FirstFruits Farms, Yakima, Wash., said in a news release. “Now there is an entire day designated to celebrating Opals and we encourage you to share them with your family, so they can enjoy them as much as we do.”

Discovered in Europe in 1999, bright yellow Opal apples are a cross between a golden delicious apple and a topaz apple.

The variety, sold exclusively in North America by FirstFruits Farms, boasts natural non-browning properties, according to the release.

Opal apples support the Youth Make a Difference grant initiative, addressing food insecurities in communities nationwide.
